GROUP DISCUSSION

A group discussion is primarily used as a method of candidate screening, particularly for educational institutions and entry-level positions. The general discussion (GD) round, which is a component of the interview process, evaluates candidates based on their speaking, communication skills, ideas, and personalities. It shows the candidate's capacity for interaction and performance in a variety of work environments.

Process of a GD round

Candidates are notified that they will be given a topic to discuss and that they have a set amount of time, say 15 minutes, to do so. The applicants are given roughly 5 to 10 minutes before the subjects are assigned to them so they can organise their thoughts on the subject.

The group is informed beforehand that they will be notified when the preparation period is finished. The group will be responsible for controlling how long the debate lasts.Group interviews are becoming more common to screen candidates more effectively, much like GD.

Tips To Crack A Group Discussion

1.) Positivity : Positivity is important and gives off an air of assurance. Avoid having a dictatorial, domineering demeanour that communicates negativity. Always express interest in the conversation. Success will be assured through confident body language and gestures.

2.) Eye Contact : Your eyes will convey your confidence. So, while starting the conversation, keep your eyes fixed on the assessor. Later, maintain regular eye contact with your classmates. Avoid gazing at the evaluator during the session and focus on the peers instead.Even when you are listening to the opposition candidate, make sure your head is slightly turned in the direction of where the candidate is standing. You may also show your gratitude by nodding occasionally during the presentation.

3.) Allow other group members to speak : Never speak over someone else when they are speaking. Even if you disagree with their point of view, refrain from interjecting and stealing their opportunity to speak. Instead, take notes and explain your point once the other person has stopped. As a team leader, be sure to strive to involve the more reserved members and invite them to share their thoughts.

4.) Speak clearly and sensibly: Always use appropriate language that is clear, concise, and respectful. Even when you disagree, act aggressively under control without letting your wrath show. Even if the subject is one you feel strongly about, keep your composure while expressing your emotions. Don't talk only to get more time to speak. Talk intelligently and as pertinently as possible to the subject at hand, without worrying about running out of time.

5.) Speak Sensibly: Don't talk more only to get more time to talk. Even if you speak less, don't worry. Instead of making irrelevant statements, you should think carefully and rationally.

6.) Formal Dressing: Do not disregard it. No weird or flashy attire. Speaking in front of a group should feel natural to you. Your work will be easier if you use encouraging body language and gestures.

7.) Keep the discussion on track: Take the initiative to get the discussion back on course if, by chance, the group starts to stray from the subject or objective. Then, people will definitely notice you. This demonstrates your ability to steer the conversation and maintain concentration. Inform the group that you must come to a conclusion at the end of the discussion. So it's important to stay on topic.
